First Day of Spring

Between the breathtaking sunset and the uncontrollable laughter Friday night, somehow we came up with a plan for a picnic in the park and fishing on the pier for Saturday to celebrate the first day of spring. The first grillin' night followed by first fishing trip of the season. We packed the cooler, loaded up the truck, grabbed the football, and off to the park we went.
It was so nice out and there were people everywhere walking dogs, flying kites, having picnics, or simply just going for a walk in the sun.

We strolled through the park and looked at all the old ruins.

We wandered through one entryway...

underneath through the graffitti-decorated halls...

through dark corridors, and finally made our way out of the ruins and back into the sun.

Not surprisingly, the boys decided it would be fun to play football on top of the ruins.

There were turrets around every corner and the fort was so much fun to explore.

Although we still haven't had a chance to get inside we took a peek through holes that have been chiseled through the concrete windows. To block public access to the interior of the fort they have sealed all the doors and windows with concrete blocks. Luckily for us, some people have chiseled holes so that you can see the interior courtyard, the arched entryways, and the old stonework that is now locked behind padlocked doors. I can just imagine what it used to be like, looking at all of the different rooms, the architecture, and the passageways that are now empty and overgrown with grasses, ivy, and even wildflowers.

We couldn't get over how beautiful Saturday was.

We ran...

we looked out at the beautiful ocean...

we walked along the shore...

looked for seashells...

we ate our picnic at a table by the water and then headed to the pier. We set up our chairs, watched the boys bait the hooks, cast our lines, and...

waited for the fish.

Lex was hilarious, checking out the worms, playing musical laps, greeting every passerby, and posing for the camera of course.

We waited...

and waited....re-cast....

jumped up every time the wind moved our lines, and waited some more.

Jac snuggled with Lex, who was completely unexcited that we were all sitting and being boring.

At this point I was d-o-n-e. Fishing is fun...if you catch fish. :)
We did not.

As the sun started to go down we packed up and headed home...where we had no sooner unpacked the cooler when the boys were on the phone planning to head down the road to the bridge to try their luck again. They were determined to catch something. And after an hour or so I received a picture message of this:

Let's just say that I have decided to never go swimming in that part of the river...EVER. Blah!

We had a great weekend, had some great laughs, and look forward to many more great times this spring and summer. Can't wait :) Thanks for a super fun weekend guys!!
