Long Weekend - Camping

And yet another camping trip...we have certainly made good use of our camping gear this summer! We had gorgeous weather and had a great four days camping at Burlingame Campground in Charlestown, Rhode Island. I had a meeting in Smithfield for work Friday morning so we got up early, packed the truck, and headed for RI. After I was done we went to lunch and drove to Burlingame. We were meeting my parents and we got there a few hours earlier than them so once we got checked in we set up for the weekend.

When we first got to the campsite, we were a little sceptical. It was in the new part of the campground, which we have never stayed in before. The campsites are set up a bit different and are offset so it appears that you are pretty close to your fellow campers. It turned out to be great and spending another weekend camping with Martin, my mom, dad, and sister was a ton of fun.

Saturday we went kayaking and canoeing on Watchaug Pond, stopped to go swimming a few times, and had a picnic on the beach. We had a delicious dinner on the grill and since it was still fairly early we were looking for something to do. We had heard that the ocean waves were up to 12 feet high at the beaches because of Hurricane Bill so we all piled into the truck and headed down to the town beach to check it out. They were not kidding! I have never seen waves like these and it was even more dramatic because it was at night and high tide. Every few waves went all the way down to the actual parking lot! Lots of people had come out to watch the waves and it was weird to see so many people with flashlights at the beach just standing there in awe.

On Sunday we headed to the same beach with chairs, a picnic, and of course my camera. The waves were just as crazy but it wasn't high tide by the time we got there so it was not quite so out of control. These pictures do not do the ocean justice. There was a local guy talking to us and he pretty much summed it up, "When the ocean is like this you just have to give it the respect it deserves." The waves were so powerful that it tried to suck you right back in if you were close enough. There was no swimming allowed (only up to your ankles) and they had life guards patrolling the beach all day.
Martin, Vicki, and I played in the waves for a few hours, pulling all kinds of crazy things out of the water. We found two beach towels, a shoe, a frisbee, a shirt, shorts, two pairs of sunglasses, an umbrella pole, a beach volleyball net, lobster cage parts, lots of metal cans, and lots of sea creatures. We could see all the seaweed left in the parking lot from the waves at high tide when they reached all the way down there.
After a long day at the beach we all cleaned up, my parents packed up their pop-up, and they left Sunday evening. We stayed one more night and went hiking Monday at Kettle Pond and even went to a bird sanctuary. We didn't see many birds but it was a great afternoon with my hubby.
Hopefully we'll have at least one more camping trip, especially now that Ant & Jac are on their way here. We're hoping the weather stays nice throughout September and October so we can have a few more weekend adventures.
